Lakewood Lodge is located in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest. The Chippewa was the first established National Forest east of the Mississippi River. It is 1.6 million acres in size and has the highest ratio of water to land in the National Forest System (more than half the acreage is water!). It has the highest density of breeding bald eagles in the contiguous 48 states (approx. 170 breeding pair) and an estimated loon population of about 5,000. In addition there are 300 miles of canoe trails, 180 miles of hiking and biking trails, 1,300 lakes and more than 2,000 known historical sites.
